Spotlight on the Murdoch House
One of the things I wish I could do on this blog is to share with you the artwork that I am making right now. But because I work on a TV show, I can’t do that, I have to keep it secret until the show airs. Now I wholeheartedly agree with this, not just because it lets me keep my job but also because I know how shitty spoilers can be. But what I can tell you about is the work I did on previous seasons. Today I want to revisit the drawing of the Murdoch House.
Free Old Art and Work-Life Balance
This week has been a frustrating one. I'm working on 4 paintings at once and like all the work I do for TV, there are about 9 people who have a direct, important say in the finished product. So here is some free old art.
Why Artists Draw Naked People
The other day a friend at work asked me why artists draw so many naked people. And my response was "People like looking at people and artists are people too."
But the question kept rattling inside my head. Why do artists depict the human form so much? I'll answer this from my perspective.
Most people see the naked human body as a sexual thing. And that makes sense in our society. But once you strip that away (aren't I punny?) what you're left with is just a beautiful, dynamic living shape.
Grow Your Collection with Tiny Art
This week I went to drop off a tiny piece of art for the first art show I've taken part in since high school.
Midnight Lightning Storm
There is tension in the air. You can feel it all the way through your body. Maybe you have a headache or you can feel it in your knees or an old injury makes itself known. The air is a little too still and is thick with moisture.
Painting Hope
Lulu, my friendly black cat, was acting differently. She mostly lay there and didn't eat much, her weight had plummeted and her normally shiny fur was matte and dull. The vet's diagnosis hit me hard, she had diabetes.
Taking Your Time Back
This week I went back to work for the latest season of Murdoch Mysteries where I work as an illustrator and graphic designer. As good as the job is, it leaves very little time for creating personal work. I have a 50-hour work week plus a daily commute of 2 hours (1 hour each way).
I took my paintings for a walk
I took my paintings for a walk, figured they'd like the fresh air. .. Jk. There was a purpose to strapping a couple canvasses to a dolly and walking them around Roncesvalles. I was picking them up after they had been photographed so that I can make prints from them.
My Apartment Was Vibrating So I Went To The Coffee Shop
As I sat at my desk making a design for a repeating pattern. I was hit by a wall of noise. It was so intense that my coffee was literally vibrating.
Fear of Failure
When I at down to paint this painting it had been 7 years since i last touched acrylic paint to canvas and I was scared.
